Sedm dní ve finských lesích. Sbírali jsme zkušenosti na Erasmu i legendární Jukole

Týden plný tréninků, kamenitých finských lesů, mezinárodních setkání a jedinečné atmosféry největších štafet světa.
První čtyři dny patřily především mapovým tréninkům společně s parťáky z Maďarska a Finska.

Seven days in the Finnish forests. We gained experience on the Erasmus programme and at the legendary Jukola
A week packed with training sessions, rocky Finnish forests, international encounters and the unique atmosphere of the world’s biggest relay races. That was the SCM and TSM JO training camp, which took place from 8 to 14 June in Finland as part of the Erasmus+ project.
After an early morning flight from Prague on Monday, the Czech delegation travelled to the Kisakallio Sports Institute, which served as our group’s base for several days.
The first four days were mainly devoted to map-reading training alongside our counterparts from Hungary and Finland. The Finnish forests offered everything we’d expect from them – stony ground, rugged terrain, the need to stay on course and maximum concentration. We undertook training sessions in the surrounding area and also took part in two ‘races’ with a mass start organised by the local club Espoon Suunta (we showed them we can give it our all!).
Alongside the sporting activities, an important part of the programme was the Erasmus+ project, in which young orienteers from the Finnish club Espoon Suunta and the Hungarian club Veszprémi Honvéd Sportegyesület are taking part alongside the Czech competitors. In Finland, we focused on the topic of volunteering in orienteering. We explored how it works in Finnish clubs and compared how our own clubs operate, discussed the involvement of volunteers in organising races, and had the chance to gain an insight into the organisation of one of Finland’s biggest sporting events.
At the end of the week, the legendary Jukola awaited us – a race with 20 000 participants at the start. Even just arriving at the huge event centre was an unforgettable experience for us – An endlessly vast car park, everything a long way off, huge shopping centres with every imaginable item, and people camping all over the woods – including our tent in a rather uncomfortable heathland spot.
The girls were the first to set off on the course as part of the Venla relay. Kiki got off to a brilliant start, handing over in 117th place. Lůca lost just a few places on the longest 10-kilometre leg and handed over to Anet, for whom this was her Skadinavian racing debut. Bára pulled our team up to 235th place out of 1399 teams with correct punch marks at the finish. Káťa didn’t make it into our relay team, so she was drafted by the Finnish team, who gained nearly 200 places on the final leg.
The men’s race started at 22:30, just like the women’s, with a steam whistle, and over 1,600 men set off on the night race. Our TSM team deserves nothing but praise – Matěj Š., Fanda, Vašek, Ctíba, Matěj J., Jáša and Alessandro ran superbly, and their final 147th place is proof of that. In absolute terms, Fanda put in the best performance, finishing 90th on his leg. Representing foreign clubs were Eda (Espoon Suunta 4, 16th in his leg!), Tomík (OK Linné 2, 240th in his leg) and Štrůdl (Ikaalisten Nouseva-Voima 3, 156th in his leg). Matějíček, Vesko and Jáchym ran the last three legs of one of the Finnish amateur relays and lifted the team up 621 places to 703rd.
On the way to the airport, we were held up for a while by a broken-down car and subsequently by a cancelled flight, which gave us an extra day of training camp and time to explore Helsinki.
It is precisely the combination of top-class sports training, international cooperation and the sharing of experiences that makes the Erasmus project a unique opportunity, offering participants much more than just the kilometres they run in the Finnish forests.
